At Whiskey River Golden Retrievers, we believe every puppy deserves the very best start in life. Training isn’t just about teaching commands—training plays a major role in shaping your puppy’s confidence, manners, and long-term behavior. A trained dog is easier to live with, safer in everyday life, and more emotionally balanced. Because of this, we strongly encourage all families to consider professional training. We are proud to recommend trainers with different approaches so you can choose the program that best fits your puppy’s needs, personality, and developmental stage.

Why Training Matters

Builds Confidence & Emotional Stability

Training helps puppies understand the world around them. Structure, repetition, and positive experiences build emotional resilience, reduce anxiety, and help puppies handle new situations calmly.

Prevents Problem Behaviors Early

Jumping, nipping, chewing, barking, and counter surfing are natural puppy behaviors, but they require guidance. Early training shapes these behaviors before they become long-term habits.

Strengthens Communication & Trust

Training creates a shared language between you and your dog. Clear communication builds trust and deepens your bond, helping your puppy feel safe and secure.

Provides Proper Socialization

Safe, controlled exposure to people, animals, handling, sounds, and new environments during the early stages of life is essential. A trainer ensures socialization is done safely, positively, and without overwhelming your puppy.

Creates a Well-Mannered Dog

Skills like leash walking, polite greetings, coming when called, impulse control, and respecting boundaries make life smoother and more enjoyable for everyone in the home.

Improves Safety

Commands such as come, stay, leave it, and drop it can prevent injuries, accidents, and dangerous situations. A trained dog is a safer dog.

Training Start Ages: Two Effective Approaches

Every dog develops differently, and every trainer has their unique philosophy. We recommend trainers who specialize in different stages because both methods are effective—they just focus on different phases of your puppy’s growth.

Early-Start

The trainer begins working with puppies shortly after they arrive home. Their programs are perfect for families who want help early on or want a strong foundation during the critical learning period.

Early-start training focuses on:

• Puppy foundations and basic obedience

• Crate and potty training guidance

• Confidence building

• Safe, appropriate socialization

• Structure and routine

This is extremely beneficial during the most influential developmental stage of your puppy’s life.

6-Month-Start

At around 6 months, puppies have more maturity, better focus, and a clearer personality, allowing for more advanced and structured work.

This training focuses on:

• More formal obedience

• Leash manners in public environments

• Working through adolescent behaviors

• Confidence and impulse control

• Refining boundaries and expectations

• More advanced training skills

This approach is ideal for families who can build early foundations at home and want professional guidance once the puppy matures.

Why We Recommend Both Approaches

Both early-start and 6-month-start training methods are valuable. They simply target different stages of development. Together, they give families flexible options and the ability to choose what best supports their goals.

Many families even choose a combination: Begin foundations at home or with an early-start trainer → move into a structured 6-month program for polishing and advanced behaviors.

Either path leads to a confident, well-mannered adult dog.

What You Can Do at Home Before Training Begins

If your puppy is too young for group classes or is waiting for a 6-month-start program, there is plenty you can do safely at home:

• Crate training and potty training

• Basic obedience (sit, down, place, name recognition)

• Short leash introduction indoors

Confidence-building games

• Handling and grooming practice

• Teaching calm behavior and manners

• Safe socialization

• Exposure to household noises, surfaces, and environments

These early habits make professional training faster, easier, and far more effective later on.

Important Note About Vaccinations

Puppies should be fully vaccinated before attending any public group classes, dog parks, pet stores, or high-traffic dog areas. Until then, focus on controlled, safe environments such as your home, your yard, or car rides. Your puppy’s health always comes first.

Please Plan Ahead — Most Trainers Have Waitlists

Quality trainers are in high demand and often book out weeks or even months in advance. We strongly encourage families to:

• Reach out to trainers before your puppy comes home

• Ask about availability and upcoming openings

• Reserve a spot early if you know you want professional training

• Get on a waitlist as soon as possible

Planning ahead ensures your puppy can begin training when ready—without unnecessary delays.

Your Puppy’s Best Future Starts Today

Investing in training is one of the greatest gifts you can give your puppy and yourself. The work you put in now shapes who they become for the rest of their life.
